A more efficient use of renewable resources

The Green Library is organising an information campaign

Your are all welcome to discuss some concepts in the Swedish environmental objectives:

- sustainability
- renewable and fossil resources
- biomass
- bio-energy
- a “loop” from plant to new plant
- safe food
- sustainable environmental technology
... your suggestions

Meetings                           - four Thursdays 3, 10, 17, 24 November 2005, 6 pm to 8 pm
Study circle
                        - eight Thursdays 6 pm to 8 pm with start 19 January 2006
A two day seminar
            - Saturday and Sunday 18-19 March 2006

The aims of this project are
·
To inform consumers about new technology in order to make them more actively engaged in environmental issues
·
To increase their awareness of unsustainable and sustainable systems and
·
To make them more positive to use innovations through better general understanding.

This will be achieved by
a)
Presenting well-known facts in a clear way
b)
Explaining improvements that could be realised by using sustainable environmental technology for the handling of renewable organic material in rest products, waste and in bio-energy crops
c)
Explaining the connection between more efficient use of renewable resources and the national environmental goals.

The handling of renewable resources is related to most of the environmental quality objectives established by the Swedish Parliament. We shall mainly concentrate on the environmental objectives 13 “A Varied Agricultural Landscape” and 15 “A Good Built Environment” (http://www.internat.environ.se/index.php3?main=/documents/objectiv/objectiv.htm) .

Background
In 2000 in Lisbon the aim was established  to make Europe the most competitive knowledge based economy in the world up to 2010. The work of EU for a better environment is formulated in the following way:
“The 6th Environment Action Programme” covers four main areas: Climate Change; Nature and Biodiversity; Environment and Health; Natural Resources and Waste (http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/newprg/).

The environmental improvements that we want to focus on are important for our survival.
Many of the present problems concerning the environment, our working environment and our health are caused by outdated technology because information on how to use developments have been too slow.

The prospects for the future of all living organisms must be both understood and improved and based on research results that need to be spred more effectively.

Only well informed citizens can put pressure on politicians and on industry to implement sustainable solutions.

New knowledge has to be communicated more efficiently. Our ambition with this project is to help to realise several national environmental quality objectives.

Citizens need access to relevant advice, information and education in order to reach all the environmental objectives that minimise pressure on the environment and support a long term sustainable development.

Using renewable resources more effectively means getting the environmental objectives seen in a positive light and using this knowledge.
